Renter Move-In Safety Checklist
Renting doesn’t mean you skip safety. Landlords cut corners all the time, and you’re the one living with the consequences. This checklist covers everything to verify before you unpack—safety, security, utilities, and documentation.

1. Locks and Entry Points
- [ ] Confirm exterior locks were rekeyed
- [ ] Test deadbolts—should fully extend into the frame
- [ ] Check windows for working latches
- [ ] Make sure sliding doors have track bars or security pins
- [ ] Verify the peephole gives a clear view
2. Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

- [ ] Check flooring for loose boards or tripping hazards
- [ ] Ensure stair railings are solid
- [ ] Inspect windows for broken seals or drafts
7. Pest and Mold Check
- [ ] Look for droppings, insect activity, or traps
- [ ] Check closets and corners for moisture or mold
- [ ] Inspect windowsills for ant trails or gaps
8. Outside Areas
- [ ] Confirm exterior lighting works
- [ ] Check parking spots or garages for safety issues
- [ ] Verify gates and exterior locks function properly
- [ ] Look for uneven walkways or loose steps
9. Documentation and Move-In Protection
- [ ] Take timestamped photos of every room
- [ ] Record existing damage in writing and send to landlord
- [ ] Keep copies of all move-in forms
- [ ] Save your lease digitally and physically
10. Utility and Account Setup
- [ ] Set up electric, gas, and water accounts (if required)
- [ ] Test Wi-Fi signal strength in key rooms
- [ ] Update address with bank, employer, and deliveries
