Landscaping Safety Checklist
Yard work looks simple until someone ends up with a cut, eye injury, broken ladder, or a rock shooting out of a mower at 80 mph. This checklist covers what actually prevents injuries and property damage when working outside.
For related outdoor and hazard-focused checklists, see Backyard Safety Checklist, Fall Hazard Checklist, and Natural Gas Safety Checklist.
1. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- [ ] Wear eye protection when using any power tool or mower.
- [ ] Use gloves suited to the task—cut-resistant, leather, or chemical-safe.
- [ ] Wear closed-toe shoes or boots; no sandals or bare feet.
- [ ] Use hearing protection for blowers, chainsaws, trimmers, and mowers.
2. Lawn Mowers and Power Equipment
- [ ] Inspect the mower for loose bolts, dull blades, and fuel leaks.
- [ ] Clear the yard of rocks, sticks, toys, and debris before mowing.
- [ ] Keep kids and pets well away from the work area.
- [ ] Never reach under the mower deck while it’s running—or recently stopped.
3. Trimmers, Edgers, and Chainsaws
- [ ] Check guards and shields before use.
- [ ] Maintain proper chain tension on chainsaws.
- [ ] Keep both hands on the tool unless the manufacturer allows otherwise.
- [ ] Avoid cutting overhead unless you are trained and have proper equipment.
4. Ladders, Heights, and Tree Work
- [ ] Set ladders on level, stable ground.
- [ ] Keep three points of contact—two feet, one hand.
- [ ] Never lean too far; reposition the ladder.
- [ ] Do not trim large branches without proper tools or experience—hire a professional.
5. Chemicals and Fertilizers
- [ ] Store fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides in original containers.
- [ ] Wear gloves and avoid skin or eye contact.
- [ ] Keep children and pets off treated areas until fully dry.
- [ ] Follow mixing instructions carefully—never “eyeball” it.
6. Irrigation and Water Hazards
- [ ] Inspect hoses and irrigation lines for leaks or trip hazards.
- [ ] Avoid using electric tools on wet grass.
- [ ] Keep sprinkler heads pointed away from electrical outlets and fixtures.
- [ ] Check for standing water that can hide holes or uneven ground.
7. Debris Handling and Disposal
- [ ] Lift with your legs—not your back.
- [ ] Use proper containers or bags for yard waste.
- [ ] Avoid burning debris unless legally allowed and safe to do so.
- [ ] Keep piles of branches or trimmings away from structures.
8. Hot Weather and Environmental Conditions
- [ ] Drink plenty of water and take breaks in the shade.
- [ ] Avoid power tool use during extreme heat or high-wind conditions.
- [ ] Wear sunscreen and protective clothing.
- [ ] Stop working immediately if dizzy, lightheaded, or overheated.
9. Gasoline and Fuel Safety
- [ ] Store gas in approved containers only.
- [ ] Refuel equipment outdoors, away from ignition sources.
- [ ] Let equipment cool before refueling.
- [ ] Never store fuel near water heaters or flame-producing appliances.
10. Final Yard Walkthrough
- [ ] Check for leftover tools, cords, or hazards in walkways.
- [ ] Ensure gates close and latch properly.
- [ ] Confirm irrigation timers and lighting work correctly.
- [ ] Add needed fixes to your Home Safety Annual Review.
Landscaping injuries are almost always preventable. Gear up, use the right tools, and respect equipment and heights. This checklist keeps outdoor work productive instead of sending you to urgent care.
