Home Appliance Safety Checklist
Most house fires and water disasters start with everyday appliances—dryers, fridges, dishwashers, stoves, water heaters, and portable devices. This checklist highlights the problems that actually matter and the habits that prevent expensive damage.
For broader home safety coverage, see Home Safety Annual Review, Fall Hazard Checklist, and New Home Walkthrough Checklist.
1. Kitchen Appliances
- [ ] Keep stovetops clear of towels, packaging, and flammable clutter.
- [ ] Clean grease from burners, drip pans, and hood filters regularly.
- [ ] Ensure oven seals are intact to prevent heat leaks.

2. Refrigerators and Freezers
- [ ] Vacuum coils yearly to prevent overheating.
- [ ] Check for door seal gaps that cause frost and compressor strain.
- [ ] Make sure fridges have adequate ventilation around the back and sides.
