Garage Safety Checklist
The garage is a mess of fire hazards, sharp tools, chemicals, poor ventilation, and electrical shortcuts. This checklist clears out the danger so the garage stops being the most hazardous room in the house.
For fire-focused issues, review Fire Extinguisher Types and Uses.
1. Fire Hazards and Ignition Sources
- [ ] Keep gasoline and propane stored outside or in proper containers
- [ ] Maintain 3 feet of clearance around water heater and furnace
- [ ] Remove oily rags (they self-heat and ignite)
- [ ] Keep fire extinguisher accessible near garage entry
- [ ] Ensure no extension cords are used permanently
2. Chemical and Hazardous Material Storage
- [ ] Store paints, thinners, and solvents in sealed containers
- [ ] Keep chemicals off the floor and away from heat sources
- [ ] Label containers clearly
- [ ] Dispose of old chemicals responsibly—don’t keep decade-old cans
3. Electrical and Wiring Safety
- [ ] Inspect outlets for scorch marks or loose plugs
- [ ] Use GFCI outlets near water sources
- [ ] Avoid daisy-chaining power strips
- [ ] Check garage door opener wiring for fraying
4. Tools and Equipment
- [ ] Store sharp tools safely—no blades hanging open
- [ ] Secure heavy tools on low shelves
- [ ] Keep power tools unplugged when not in use
- [ ] Inspect extension cords for cracks or exposed wire
5. Storage and Organization
- [ ] Keep walkways clear—no tripping over boxes
- [ ] Don’t overload shelves or plastic bins
- [ ] Store items vertically when possible to maximize space
- [ ] Use wall hooks for bikes, hoses, and tools
6. Ventilation and Air Quality
- [ ] Ensure vents are unobstructed
- [ ] Never run vehicles inside the garage
- [ ] Keep door slightly open when using chemicals or paints
- [ ] Install CO detector near garage entry to home
7. Pest and Wildlife Issues
- [ ] Look for droppings or shredded insulation
- [ ] Seal gaps around the garage door and foundation
- [ ] Store food (pet food especially) in sealed bins
8. Garage Door Safety
- [ ] Test auto-reverse function with a small object
- [ ] Check springs and cables for fraying
- [ ] Make sure manual disconnect works
- [ ] Verify door seals properly to keep out drafts and pests
9. Security and Access Control
- [ ] Keep garage-to-home entry door locked
- [ ] Disable old keypad codes
- [ ] Hide or remove remote opener from vehicles parked outside
- [ ] Ensure exterior lights cover the garage area
A safe garage prevents fires, injuries, chemical exposure, and break-ins. Handle this checklist and the garage becomes a functional space instead of a hazard zone.
