Carbon Monoxide Safety Checklist
Carbon monoxide is invisible, odorless, and deadly. A CO problem gives you zero warning unless your detectors are in the right places and your appliances aren’t leaking fumes. This checklist covers everything that actually prevents CO poisoning.
For alarm maintenance details, see Smoke Detector Maintenance Checklist.
1. CO Detector Placement
- [ ] One CO detector on every level of the home
- [ ] Place detectors outside sleeping areas
- [ ] Install combo smoke/CO units where appropriate
- [ ] Keep detectors at least 10 feet from stoves and bathrooms
- [ ] Avoid installing directly above fuel-burning appliances
2. Monthly Testing and Maintenance
- [ ] Test alarms using the built-in button
- [ ] Replace batteries as soon as chirping starts
- [ ] Vacuum vents lightly to remove dust
- [ ] Replace CO detectors every 5–7 years
3. Fuel-Burning Appliance Checks
- [ ] Have furnaces inspected annually
- [ ] Check water heater vents for obstructions
- [ ] Inspect wood stoves and fireplaces for proper drafting
- [ ] Ensure gas ovens and ranges burn with a steady blue flame
- [ ] Verify dryer vents exhaust outdoors
4. Ventilation and Airflow
- [ ] Keep flues and chimneys clear of nests and debris
- [ ] Don’t block fresh air intakes
- [ ] Avoid running exhaust fans too long near fuel appliances (can cause backdrafting)
- [ ] Ensure garage-to-home door seals properly
5. Generator and Equipment Safety
- [ ] Never run generators indoors or in garages
- [ ] Keep generators 20+ feet from windows and doors
- [ ] Don’t use charcoal grills indoors
- [ ] Ensure power tools with engines stay outside
6. Symptoms of CO Exposure
- [ ] Headache
- [ ] Dizziness
- [ ] Nausea
- [ ] Confusion or feeling “off”
- [ ] Sudden fatigue among multiple people at once
7. What to Do If CO Alarm Sounds
- [ ] Leave the home immediately
- [ ] Call 911 from outside or a neighbor’s home
- [ ] Don’t re-enter until cleared by professionals
- [ ] Have appliances inspected before returning to normal use
CO issues are rare but deadly. This checklist keeps detectors working, airflow correct, and appliances from leaking fumes into your home.
